The History of Our World, Part 2

So far I've hopefully given a pretty good explanation of what exactly we are trying to do, but I think to really understand the what, one has to know the why (in particular, this is my own why). I was and still am dyslexic, although I've managed to learn to compensate for it, and somehow I managed to double major in college in computer science and applied mathematics.

Growing up with dyslexia, I spent a lot of time after school with some great teachers and tutors who were willing to help me catch up with my classmates. I was lucky. As an adult I read about many students not so fortunate. School budgets are shrinking, class sizes are growing, schools are shutting down, and people are expecting teachers to somehow make up for the lost resources. Frankly it seems impossible. Just recently I read about schools shutting down all over San Francisco and Oakland, and it scares me. This is in big part why E-Office Hours was started.

I don't pretend to think that we can fix every problem, but I'm certainly willing to try. In an effort to do so we are already planning to build our company into more than just websites for teachers.

Imagine...
  • You're a student in America, and have a physics question. You ask our global Virtual TA, who gets the answer from a small town in Israel.
  • You're a teacher in Australia, and every student is asking that same last minute question, vital to their success for tomorrows exam. With one answer you can help your entire class and save yourself time.
  • You're a parent, and your student just doesn't get how to solve that math problem. You log into their account and show them where the answer lies on their teachers VirtualOffice.
  • You're a student studying French literature in England, and with the click of a button you can instantly connect to a tutor in France who sees everything you're working on exactly as you see it, and helps you in real time to understand that one concept that alludes you.

We are working on it. E-Office Hours has been and will be built for students and teachers, and the educational community they form. If you were ever a student in any form, taught in any way, then this product belongs to you as much as it does to us.

So I guess that's our history. I could go into much more detail, but once again, check out the site! Its all there. And please tell anyone you know who might need us.

Cheers,
Dan

  • Hello Dan!
I open the first Mississippi course. Here's why I'm a user of your site.

I teach at a small community college in Mississippi. This past year, my college, hometown, and home took a direct hit from Katrina. It was positively ESSENTIAL to get a website up and running - most of my students commute, and they desperately needed a method to pick up notes, assignments, and send in work. If the roofers are in the front yard-we do NOT LEAVE!

Over the past few years, I had tried several times to create a website, but ran into problems - I don't have time to learn programming, our college doesn't have staff or funding for personalized web development, and the available websites just were NOT professional enough for college. Blinking school buses and pretty crayons won't impress my students.

There was also the problem of content - I intended to dump ALL my assignments, all my handouts, and create discussion forums.

A poster on the college professor chatboard of Teachers.Net suggested eoffice hours, and I set a timer to see just how fast it would work.

Actually, I set up the first site complete with discussion forum, assignment, and handout within 30 minutes. The next course took 15.

My students have enjoyed using the website, barring some learning curves for everyone.

Another insructor has opened a site.

The support staff has been EXTREMELY helpful and friendly.

Please feel free to use this in your advertising.
